The Legal Unit safeguards the legal interests of Lagos Island Local Government, providing advisory, contract vetting, dispute resolution, and public legal education.

Our Mandate

To safeguard the legal interests of Lagos Island Local Government; ensure that all Council actions, policies, contracts, and engagements are rooted in legality, transparency, and due process; provide advisory services to the Executive, Legislature, and all departments; manage litigation and dispute resolution; and promote public legal education.

What We Do

  • Advise the Chairman, Council Manager, and all departments on legal matters
  • Draft and vet contracts, MoUs, and agreements
  • Represent the Council in courts and tribunals
  • Resolve disputes through mediation and ADR mechanisms
  • Monitor compliance with procurement, financial, and civil service rules
  • Support bye-law drafting and legislative interpretation

1. Advisory Services

  • Providing legal advice to the Executive Chairman, Council Manager, Treasurer, HODs, and Councillors
  • Reviewing proposed policies, programmes, and administrative actions for legal compliance

2. Contract Drafting and Vetting

  • Drafting and vetting contracts, agreements, MoUs, and service level agreements

3. Litigation and Dispute Resolution

  • Representing the Council in courts and tribunals
  • Handling disputes and exploring ADR mechanisms

4. Compliance and Risk Management

  • Monitoring adherence to procurement laws, financial regulations, and civil service rules
